Bar vs Counter vs Dining Height: Which Outdoor Set Do You Actually Need?

Three heights, three completely different experiences. Get this wrong and a beautiful set feels wrong every time you sit in it. Here is how to choose.

Dining height — 29 to 30 inch table, 18 inch seat

Standard indoor table height. Best for long meals, families with small children, and anyone who wants their feet flat on the deck. If the set will host Thanksgiving, buy dining height. Try the Curved Adirondack 5-Piece Dining Set or the Traditional 7-Piece Dining Set (High Back).

Counter height — 36 inch table, 24 to 26 inch seat

The in-between that most people end up loving. Tall enough to see over a deck rail while seated, low enough to get in and out of easily. Our Curved Adirondack 5-Piece Counter Set and XL Curved 5-Piece Counter Set are the two most-ordered counter sets we build.

Bar height — 41 inch table, 30 inch seat

Made for standing conversation, drinks and a view. On a raised deck or a soundside porch, bar height puts your eye line over the railing. See the Curved Adirondack 5-Piece Bar Set, or the Curved Adirondack 3-Piece Bar Bistro Set for a balcony-sized pair.

The deck rail option nobody thinks of

If your deck is narrow, a rail hugger table mounts flush to the top rail and gives you a full bar without eating floor space. The Rail Hugger Bar Set (52 inch) covers a small deck; the Rail Hugger Bar Set (100 inch) turns a whole railing into the best seat on the property.

Quick rule of thumb

Measure from the deck to the top of your railing. Under 36 inches, go dining or counter. Over 36 inches, go bar height or rail hugger — otherwise you are looking at a wall of railing all evening.
